Interesting Facts about PyeongChang

PyeongChang and not Pyeonchang for the Olympics

In an effort to keep viewers from becoming confused, the city decided to go with the CamelCase spelling for the Olympics and become PyeongChang, as the capital of North Korea is Pyongyang.

The governor of Gangwon-do was concerned of the confusion because in 2014, a member of the Maasai tribe in Kenya purchased a ticket to North Korea when he was supposed to attend a United Nations conference in PyeonChang. “Because of the similarity, foreigners can get confused,” Gangwon Governor Choi Moon-soon said. “So, in order to avoid confusion, we have decided to rebrand it as PyeonChang with an uppercase C.”

PyeonChang is two words in one anyway, as Pyeong means “peace” in Korean and “chang” means prosperity.
