Interesting Facts about PyeongChang

Third time’s a charm

PyeongChang previously made two unsuccessful bids to host the Games, coming up short to Sochi, Russia in 2014 and Vancouver, Canada in 2010. This time around though, the group was able to present a package that placed it ahead of Munich, Germany and Annecy, France.

The International Olympic Committee selected PyeongChang on the first round of voting, as it received more votes from the members than both Munich and Annecy combined. They are the second South Korean city to host the Games, joining Seoul which hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Overall, two other Asian cities have hosted the Winter Games including Sapporo, Japan in 1972 and Nagano, Japan in 1998.
