On Top of the World: The Most Recognized Mountains
The Matterhorn
The Matterhorn is one of the most famous peaks of the Alps, a mountain range which stretches from Switzerland to Italy. The Alps have been a famous destination for tourism and adventurous winter activity ever since the first climbing attempts were made in 1865. The summit of the Matterhorn is recorded as 14,705 feet. The Matterhorn is also notable because its summit has four distinct sides, almost like a pyramid, and the sides each face the four points of a compass almost exactly.
If you want to visit the Matterhorn but aren’t able to make the 10-day trek to the summit, there are cable cars that will take you to nearby peaks like the Klein Matterhorn (Little Matterhorn). The Hörnli Hut, which is the traditional start of the summit ascent, is also accessible by a hiking path.
