On Top of the World: The Most Recognized Mountains
| August 21, 2017
Mount Vesuvius
Mt. Vesuvius is known as the mountain that brought down a whole generation of people living in Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD. After it erupted, both towns were buried by lava, rocks, and ash, which completely preserved them until archaeologists were able to unearth them centuries later.
The mountain itself, which overlooks the city of Naples, is actually still an active volcano. The last large eruption was in 1944 — lava and ash destroyed four nearby villages. There is a detailed evacuation plan in place if it ever happens again, so don’t worry about safety if you ever want to visit.
