Mt. Merapi
Mt. Merapi, which is also known as Fire Mountain, is located in Indonesia and is an active volcano. It has been erupting regularly since 1548, and smoke can often be seen emerging from its peak. Thousands of people live right below the volcano, and during periods of seismic activity villagers are always put on high alert.
The area around Merapi has been established as a national park, which is a beautiful place to visit, but nobody is allowed to stay there permanently because of the continuous danger that the volcano presents. Mt. Merapi is central to many Javanese creation myths, and people regularly leave offerings near the peak.
