On Top of the World: The Most Recognized Mountains
| August 21, 2017
Ben Nevis
Ben Nevis isn’t a particularly tall or angular mountain, but it’s famous because it has become one of the most recognized views in the Scottish Highlands. It’s actually the largest peak in Britain, and was formerly a volcano before it collapsed. If you’re not interested in the ambitious climb, you can simply view the mountain from the lower area of Glen Nevis, which itself is a lushly green and beautiful place to explore.
The first recorded climb of Ben Nevis happened in 1771, when botanist James Robertson reached the peak in order to survey the surrounding area and collect biological specimens.
