On Top of the World: The Most Recognized Mountains
| August 21, 2017
Denali
Before 2015, only native Alaskans and the indigenous people of the area called this mountain Denali. It was recognized on paper as Mt. McKinley, named by a gold prospector after a presidential candidate who was running at the time. In 2015, the mountain was renamed its original name, Denali.
Denali is the highest mountain peak in North America, stretching an amazing 20,130 feet in the air. Although people have attempted to summit it for centuries, the first recorded successful attempt was in 1963. It’s located in central Alaska, so extreme cold temperatures and avalanches are always a risk.
