7. China (Floods)

1931 was a grim year for China. After a long drought, the country was hit by severe non-stop rain which caused floods all over the central areas. The so-called Yellow River Floods are thought to have been the deadliest natural disaster ever recorded as the death toll ranged from 145,000 to 4 million people.

Unfortunately, 80 years on and the floods are still very much happening. In 2016, over 400 people were killed with damages reaching over 22 billion dollars. The reason for the sudden heavy rainfall is connected to the El Niño phenomenon.
