9. Haiti (Earthquake)

If there’s one country still suffering the horrific aftermath of a magnitude 7 earthquake, it’s Haiti. The country sits on the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone and is no stranger to earthquakes, the last one before that happening in 1994.

However, in 2010, the tremors hit an extremely populated area, just 25 km off the capital Port-au-Prince. When you take into consideration that Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with many shanty towns and poorly built structures, it’s clear why the damage was enormous. Between 100,000 to 316,000 people died that January.
