8. Peru (Avalanche)
Every year many travelers come down from the Andes to enjoy the beaches of the Peruvian coast. Unfortunately, Peru (along with Chile) lies between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates, making the region prone to earthquakes.
In 1970, the Great Peruvian Earthquake took the lives of over 66,000 people. The earthquake triggered a massive avalanche of rock, ice and snow, which ran for 18 km at roughly 300 km per hour. The latest earthquake happened in 2015 and there were luckily no fatalities.
