2. Mari Lwyd – Wales
Mari Lwyd is a custom in South Wales that involves a group of people affixing a horse’s skull to a pole, decorating it, then bringing it with them as they try to obtain entry to a friend or family member’s home. The host first denies them entry, then the singers try and persuade him by singing various traditional songs. Denial is followed by various songs, and this goes back and forth until eventually the hosts relents, and brings the carollers inside for some well-deserved food and drink.
