7. Hide the Pickle – USA

Although it may sound a bit lewd, the tradition of Hide the Pickle actually has a fun and innocent origin. Many families hide a pickle-shaped decoration in their Christmas tree and on Christmas morning children compete to see who can find it hiding among the branches first. The winner is then awarded an extra present from Santa Claus.

This tradition was rumored to have come from Germany, but that’s actually apocryphal – there’s no record of this ever happening in Germany, only in the USA.
