8. Caganer – Catalonia

Caganer is a figure that’s added to the Christmas nativity scene by Catalan Spaniards. “El Caganer” literally means “the crapper,” and the Caganer figure was traditionally depicted as a peasant in traditional Catalan garb, squatting down to poop. No one knows exactly how Caganer made it in to the nativity scene, but several theories suggest that he is a symbol of fertility or was inserted to bringing humor to a strictly religious holiday.

Modern Catalans have made Caganer figurines out of famous figures in politics, religion, and pop culture. You can buy different ones every year!
