Cultured Palate: Dishes from South Korea

Soju
One Korean-made alcoholic beverage that has really caught on in North America is soju – a clear liquor typically made from rice. Many people compare the taste to a sweet vodka.
The alcohol content varies wildly – some brands are watered down, and only contain about 20% ABV, while others keep it purer for a stronger taste, with a 40% ABV. If you’re drinking soju in Korea, you should be aware of the traditions that accompany the drink – you should always receive a drink from an elder with two hands, and bow respectfully before downing it in one gulp.
