4. The Year (Really) Starts After Carnival

In Brazil, the year doesn’t really start in January – more like at the end of February or beginning of March. Most of the kids and youngsters are enjoying the summer holidays, and those who have to work are just complaining about the heat and trying to avoid it.

Although in theory Carnival lasts for only a week, in reality, it starts just after the New Year’s festivities. The blocos de carnaval (street parties) happen every weekend (and sometimes weekdays) in January and February. When you realize there are around 500 different blocos, would you rather work or have fun?
