9. Chanko nabe
Sumo wrestling goes back centuries, and while you don’t really see that many sumo wrestlers walking around Japan these days, their favored foods are still with us. Chanko nabe is a noodle dish, accompanied by plenty of protein, that used to be the first choice of sumo wrestlers looking to put on weight. Now, restaurants like Chanko Shibamatsu Midorigaoka-ten in Tokyo — which is run by a former sumo wrestler — are still making the same recipe for their customers, but in much more moderate quantities.
