Cultured Palate: International Dishes from Brazil

11. Romeu e Julieta
One of the simplest Brazilian desserts that you can find is Romeu e Julieta, a tiny sandwich made from cheese and quince paste, a sticky-sweet confection made of cooked-down quince fruit. Presumably, the dessert got its name because it’s such a good pairing — just like Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
Brazilians love the contrast between the sweet fruit paste and rich, salty cheese. You can find it made with many different kinds of cheese, but queijo minas (fresh, salty cheese) or requeijão (a creamy cheese) are common.
