Hot Magma: Active Volcanoes You Can Visit
| September 10, 2018
Whakaari — New Zealand
One of the world’s largest marine volcanoes is Whakaari, also known as White Island, which is located 30 miles off the coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Only a small fraction of the volcano’s peak can be seen above the water. The entire volcano stretches a remarkable 5,249 feet above the sea floor, with the last 1,053 feet visible above sea level.
Ever since it was discovered by Western explorers in 1769, it has been venting out smoke and steam, which is probably why it was given the name Te Puia o Whakaari (“The Dramatic Volcano”) by New Zealand’s indigenous Maori people.
