Hot Magma: Active Volcanoes You Can Visit
| September 10, 2018
Mt. Vesuvius — Italy
Mt. Vesuvius, which caused the infamous burial of the towns of Herculaneum and Pompeii in 79 AD, is the only active volcano located in mainland Europe. Although many local citizens live within walking distance of the horrific reminders of the might of Vesuvius, they’ve persisted in building towns and cities within the blast radius. Luckily for them, Mt. Vesuvius has been quiet since its last major eruption in 1944.
The death toll from the 79 AD eruption alone is believed to total over 16,000 people, and hundreds of others have died from eruptions in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.
