Hot Magma: Active Volcanoes You Can Visit

Mt. Vesuvius — Italy

Mt. Vesuvius, which caused the infamous burial of the towns of Herculaneum and Pompeii in 79 AD, is the only active volcano located in mainland Europe. The death toll from the 79 AD eruption alone is believed to total over 16,000 people, and hundreds of others have died from eruptions in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.
