Mount Nyiragongo — Democratic People’s Republic of the Congo
If you’ve ever wanted to see a terrifying defiance of Mother Nature in person, head to the slopes of Mount Nyiragongo in the Democratic People’s Republic of the Congo. There are dozens of villages there that are clustered on the slopes of the mountain, which is also home to the world’s largest lava lake.
In the past, the lava has drained out of the caldera during an eruption at a speed that baffled scientists. Until they realized that the presence of alkali-rich rock allows the lava to flow like water, reaching never-before-seen speeds.
