Hot Magma: Active Volcanoes You Can Visit
| September 10, 2018
Mount Erebus — Antarctica
Mount Erebus, located on Ross Island in Antarctica, is the southernmost active volcano on Earth. It is named for a dark region of the mythological Underworld, and its name has been eerily prescient. In 1979, a sightseeing flight that originated in New Zealand flew into whiteout conditions over Ross Island, and crashed into Mount Erebus, killing all 257 people on board.
As of now, the only people who live within eruption range of the volcano are scientists working at the Mount Erebus Volcano Observatory.
