12. Freya Stark

Stark is an Italian travel writer who lived for 100 years and wrote over 20 books about her travels. When Stark was nine years old, she was given a copy of One Thousand and One Nights, and fell in love with the Middle East, where she’d later travel extensively.

Stark began her travels by serving with the British Cross during World War I and after that she explored Lebanon and Iraq. In 1933, Stark received an award for her journey around Iran. She’s also ventured to the Arabian Peninsula, Turkey, and Afghanistan.
