14. Mary Kingsley

Born in 1862 in England, Mary Kingsley was the first European to explore remote parts of Gabon. Kingsley didn’t receive any formal education as she learned how to read at home. After her parent’s death in 1892, she began her travels.

Kingsley traveled extensively around West and Central Africa and became famous for fighting against long-held concepts. In her book Travels in West Africa, Kingsley was sympathetic to native Africans and portrayed them as civilized people instead of savages.
