6. Christopher Columbus
Columbus is known as the man who “discovered” the Americas, but we now know that the Vikings got there first in the 11th century. However, his expeditions created a long-lasting relationship with the New World.
As a teenager, Columbus went on voyages to the Mediterranean, and also to Africa. With the fall of Constantinople, Europeans needed a new route to the Indies, and so the expeditions began. After lobbying the Spanish Crown, Columbus did four voyages to the Americas to establish settlements.
