9. Musa Keita

Thought to have been one of the richest people that has ever lived, Musa Keita was a West African mansa, which roughly translates to king or sultan. His empire covered the area from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Chad (Mauritania to Nigeria).

Keita became famous for his pilgrimage to Mecca. He traveled over 4,000 miles with 60,000 people, of which 12,000 were slaves. Legend has it that he spent so much gold in Cairo that its value declined and took a decade to recover.
