8. Xuanzang

Xuanzang was a Chinese traveler and scholar born in 602. At the age of 13, he became a novice monk and reached the rank of a full monk by the time he was 20.

Finding inconsistencies in the scriptures, Xuanzang decided to travel to India to learn more about Buddhism. To accomplish his task, Xuanzang went from one monastery to another absorbing as much knowledge as he could. Since he was traveling by land, Xuanzang’s journey took 17 years to complete.
