While Japan tends to be a relatively safe place for women to travel alone, there are a few problem areas. The biggest threat that Tokyo poses for solo female travelers is their recent upsurge in women having their drinks spiked, and subsequently sexually harassed.
At one time, this issue was so bad that the American Embassy issued warnings for all female Americans living in Tokyo, warning them to guard their drinks. If you want to enjoy a cocktail after a long day without worrying about some stranger spiking your drink, then perhaps choose to avoid Tokyo.
